[MW:25039] RE: 25036] RE: 25027] impact results - UHT material welding

Hi Fernando,

Welding of 517 grades is never easy. It becomes difficult when impact properties are in question. If you could share details about (MTR) the materials, welding consumable, and the failed PQR, then there could be some meaningful suggestions provided.

Thanks.

There is an assumption here that the weld as deposited met the certificate values which reduced as a result of the PWHT. I don’t expect that you had anything like the certificate results in your weld as-welded. Was it tested in the as-welded condition for comparison purposes? Normally PWHT would improve the results (not always though – because you are into the finer points of the weld metallurgy here). It is the way the weld has been deposited which gave the poor results, not what that consumable can achieve when deposited under ideal conditions.

Dear colleagues,

I hope this email finds all you well

Project: ASME VIII- Pressure vessel - material ASME SA517 Gr B. Thickness 9,5 mm.

I have to qualify a WPS for welding ASME SA517 - B with impact requirements at -40 C,

Also is required PWHT, and my first results of impact test @-40C of test plate were very low. (lateral expansion less than 0,2mm and energy less than 20J)

The declared Values of certificate of consumable is 75J @ -73C  !!!

Can the presence of PWHT changes so much the values of impact test? (certificate´s value is "as welded" and my results is "after PWHT".

Any help will be very useful.

Thanks a lot,

Re: [MW:25031] Chemical Composition

I see quite complicated my very dear sir, it is easiest to think, that in my humble opinion; make again inspection with PMI, this equipment contains a database large enough to pipe carbon steel or otherwise of the materials listed in Section II of ASME, then you give one or two suggestions of material to inspected and already with that outcome consult the code again, it will be easier to hit it to the identification of the material no desire to annoy, that inspection is best done when the materials are bought, to verify their authenticity before making installation and avoid catastrophic failures like the one you already have.

 Dear Sirs,

Project: Coal fired power plant ASME B31.1 CODE

We received a pipe material 1 inch dia with a material of
 A335 P91.
 This material had been welded.
During operational, 2 years after, one pipe burst out.
We send for testing to check the chemical composition.
 Please see attached docs.

I checked on ASME Section II Part A and it was very far from
the chemical requirements of A335 P91.

My query is that, what kind of pipe material base on the
 result of test report.

Your reply to this query will be highly appreciated.

Re: [MW:25028] COMBINATION PROCESS WPS

Dear Sir,

A new WPS is to made (say WPS-B) for GTAW.

When you are welding a joint where only GTAW is to be used then you have to use WPS-B and when you have to weld GTAW + SMAW then WPS-A to be followed.

Separate WPS are to be maintained because of this reasons. No code references for this.

When you are welding only with GTAW and mentioning WPS-A will make a misunderstanding that it is welded with GTAW + SMAW.

So my opinion is to make a new WPS with the same PQR and maintain both WPS depends on the process you are using to weld.

Re: [MW:25025] Chemical Composition

Dear Mac,

The chemical composition/properties of the tested material are aprx. meeting with SA335 P1/P2.

It should be tested when the material was received through PMI to confirm major elements like Cr, Mo, etc.

Mac

Re: [MW:25020] Relation between diffusible hydrogen and welding current

Yes, diffusible hydrogen is more, more arc voltage is required to push the current due to bad conduct electricity by Hydrogen. Example 6010 is required more arc voltage when compared with 7018
