[MW:20440] AWS D1.1 PQR QUALIFICATION USING 1" PIPE


 1)      Does D1.1 restrict usage of 1" pipe for PQR qualification?
2)      Does D1.1 restrict usage of full section tensile specimen?

Clause 4.9.3.4 tells about the reduced section tensile specimen only &
 Fig 4.14, they giving the specimen size details for 2",3",6" & 8" & above only. Does it mean we are not allowed to choose 1" for PQR qualification?
I've checked in D1.1 interpretations also I cannot able to find. If anyone have the details please share.

Hi Hrushikesh,
 
SUS 329J4L(Nearest UNS 32506) is relatively an uncommon SDSS. Only the manufacturer and a few other handful suppliers will be versed with it. Due to higher contents of Cr and W (if used in the heat ), both of which are strong ferritizers, this steel will have more tendency to form more ferrite in the weld metal.
 
The ideal SMAW consumable & GTAW filler metal  for welding such steel would be E/ER-2593 or 2594. The product used by your organization, Weld TIG 329J4L conforms to ER 2594 specification.
 
Welding precautions for this steel, including heat input control, interpass control should be similar to the other DSS and SDSS. Amongst  Indian welding consumable manufacturers D&H seems to manufacture matching product for this steel.
 
There's nothing wrong in using 2% Nitrogen in shielding gas.This is an universal practice to compensate for the Nitrogen loss from the weld metal during welding and solidification. This is usually compensated by adding Nitrogen in the shielding gas so as to maintain the desired  Ferrite: Austenite ratio.
 
As advised by the others also, I would say, change the shielding gas on discussion with your client and then see how it goes.
 
FYI I've attached the extract from a lecture of Dr D. Kotecki (who's an authority on these steels). This lecture was organized by  Indian Institute of Welding in 2006. It tells the various pros and cons of DSS/SDSS welding.

Applications

These consumables are designed to weld equivalent 'type 92'

9%Cr steels modified with tungsten, vanadium, niobium,

nitrogen and a small addition boron to give improved long

term creep properties.

They are specifically intended for high integrity structural

service at elevated temperature so the minor alloy additions

responsible for its creep strength are kept above theminimum

considered necessary to ensure satisfactory performance. In

practice, weldments will be weakest in the softened

(intercritical) HAZ region of parentmaterial, as indicated by

so-called 'type IV' failure in transverse weld creep tests.

The rupture strength of P92 is up to 30% greater than P91,

and interest in its use is growing as a candidate for

components such as

headers, main steam piping and

turbine casings

, in fossil fuelled power generating plants.

Microstructure

In the PWHT condition the microstructure consists of

tempered martensite.

PWHT

Minimum preheat temperature 200°C with maximum

interpass temperature of 350°C; in practice a preheatinterpass

range of 200 – 300°C is normal. To ensure full

martensite transformation welds should be cooled to ~100°C

prior to PWHT; up to 50mm wall thickness can be cooled to

room temperature whilst thick wall forgings or castings

should not be cooled below ~80°C prior to PWHT.

ASME base material codes allowPWHT down to 730°C but

for weld metals PWHT is normally carried out in the range

750-770°C. Optimumproperties are obtainedwith PWHT at

760°C for 4 hours.

When compared with directly matching weld metal, the

addition of some nickel and reduction of niobiumprovides a

useful improvement in toughness after PWHT.

3 hermetically sealed ring-pull metal tins

Redry

250 – 300°C/1-2h to ensure H2 < 10ml/100g, 300 – 350°C/1-2h to ensure H2 < 5ml/100g. Maximum

Storage

of redried electrodes at 100 – 200°C in holding oven, or 50 – 150°C in heated quivers: no limit, but

maximum 6 weeks recommended.
