Re: [MW:10886] Inconel 625 overlay on AISI4140

Dear Venu,

The maximum allowable hardness at any location on welded surfaces, after final machining shall be less than 35 HRC for Ni-Cr-MO-Co (Inconel 625).

Please confirm with vendor regarding PWHT but usually required with this alloy, assuming Weld qualification in accordance with ASME Sec ix, following are the aspects to be considered while reviewing WPS/PQR:-

-No limit on max. deposit thickness qualified- No worries in your case
-Base metal thickness range (1" to unlimited)- No worries in your case
-for processe depositing a weld bead width greater than 1/2 in. wide, the weld overlay shall consist of a minimum of three weld beads in the first layer.
-When a chemical composition is specified in the WPS, chemical analysis specimens shall be removed at locations specified in QW-462.5(b) or QW-462.5(e). The chemical analysis shall be performed in accordance with QW-462.5(a) and shall be within the range specified in the WPS. This chemical analysis is not required when a chemical composition is not specified on the WPS.
-A change in the UNS number for each AWS classification.
-Position and Diameter is supplementary essential variable.
-Liquid Penetrant testing (colour contrast)- Surface Indications (1.6 mm) maximum rounded or linear).
-5X visual examination of cross sectional macro: (0.8 mm) max length of linear or rounded indication).
-Chemical Composition (Weld overlay cladding shall conform to ASTM B424 UNS N08825.

Should you have further query, feel free to post again.

Manpreet Singh

The overlay shall be of approximately 4~5mm on a 100 mm thicksection .

>The vendor has submitted us two procedureswith pulsed GMAW (Auto ) welding process having with and without PWHT. When we referred the procedure with PWHT we found that theprocedure is qualified (at 540 degreeC @ soaking time 2hrs and rateof heating 150 degree C/Hr)
