Please tell me what are the issues if we weld SS904L with SS304? SS904L have low carbon while SS304 is having high carbon content.

Codes are not handbooks. Metallurgy knowledge is necessary.
In general CS needs to be buttered with an alloy which is not sensitive to sensitization from one part and from the other part does not give low FW. Then PWHT is performed and then SS us welded

(13 mm) thick may be combined with one or more other PQRs recording another welding process and any greater base metal thickness.  Since my PQRs are carried out with 8mm thck. is it possible for me to combine them and apply SMAW Back Weld instead of SAW or not?

[MW:24915] Combination of PQRs

For pressure of 5Bar, you may define the thickness for IS 2062 based on dia, loadings on the vessel, and any more factors dictated by client spec,

However for MOC (Chemical composition) we have to consider so many other parameters also like as…

1.       Fluid in service / Storage.

2.       Atmospheric conditions.

3.       Client specifications.

4.       Design life / No.of years for service…

5.       Any weight limitations..

6.       Application (like as surge tanks i.e periodical loadings and to absorb surge pressures)…

7.       And as you required temperature also…

As per IS 2062 –

And as per your statement 160Deg C is a high temperature application, better you may refer ASTM A 515…

(though a very negligible difference between these in chemical composition, but you can confidently design and work with ASTM A 515)

IS2062 Grade E410 B0 can be used upto zero degree celcius and max 300 degree celcius.
Quality C can be used to as low as minus 20 degree Celcius.

This tank we are using for food storage (Extreme Hygienic).


Please tell me what are the issues if we weld SS904L with SS304? SS904L have low carbon while SS304 is having high carbon content.


Will there be any issue of iron contamination in future which may be non-hygienic for food applications?

[MW:24906] BOLT& NUTS CONCERNS

Dear All.

There are some issues and concerns about bolt and nuts:(please mentioned reference document)
1.If the ring gaskets are lubricated and bolt tightening have been done and no leaks observed during hydro testing, is it accepted or not?if not flanges must loose?

2.Unfortunately after tightening, C.S bolts and nuts are painted.is there a document that painting forbidden or not (especially for sour service)?

3.B7M bolt and nut have rusted before tightening, are they must be derusted or not& how?rusting can affect on torque value? and regard to any leakage observed can be assured that min required tension are applied on bolts?

4.Is there a technical document that investigate effectiveness of Hammer tightening vs. of wrench and tensioner?

Just forget it. You can’t deposit Carbon Steel on the top of 625 weld deposit. Welds will simply crack. Stay with 625 deposit all the way. That’ one of the problem on single sided welding of 625 clad pipes. What’s the thickness of the pipes involved and the design specification???

Thanks for your help and sending that practical guide my proposal is;

Buttering of the edge of joint up to 1/3 of pipe thickness by INCONEL 625 filer (ENiCrMo-3 /ERNiCrMo-3), then continue welding of root pass by INCONEL 625, after completion of root pass fill and cap the joint by carbon steel electrode/filer.

what do you think about it?

Please see the practical guideline for your reference. The highlighted texts would be helpful. Feel free to ask if have any clarifications. For single sided FP welds, ER-NiCrMo-3(625 type) consumables are the only options.
