Re: [MW:17438] E 7018 used instead of E7018-1

Dear binu,

First of all,our welder will not decide that what type of electrodes we should have to use.we should have to first establish the WPS it must be approved by client. As per Approved WPS by client we should have to follow that welding procedure  and we can do welding as per WPS.if your welding is not done as per  that welding procedure or u did not followed that welding procedure or it is opposite of approved procedure it is not desirable in that case you are wrong.

A333 Gr 6 is LTCS(Low temperature carbon steel) material.we can weld that material by E-7018-1 Only.we cant use that electrode directly in welding, first prepare test coupon of that electrode by welding of plates as per ASME Section-II Part-C and send for electrode qualification test in the approved lab by client where it will be gone for chemical test and impact test.

Before use of E-7018-1 it should be impact tested at -46 C with permissible acceptable criteria of impact energy and acceptable limit of chemical composition during chemical test as per ASME SEC-II Part- C or client specification.

There is no any NDT method to know which electrode you used for welding. But we can only assume that if there is not any material available other than LT CS(A333 Gr 6) and you use E-7018, i sure that joints welded by E-7018 only but if also not any electrode available other than E-7018.

E-7018-1 is used in low temperature services.so we can use only E-7018-1 electrode for welding of LTCS material.

Your Client is right if Client Specification says about selection of electrode.

Once you have impact requirement, you can not use E7018 directly.

Dear Experts,

Our welders are used E7018 instead of 7018-1 for A333 Gr-6.
Now client is asking to cut the joints.
Moreover they are asking to prove the remaining joints whether they are welded with 7018-1 or not.
Can anybody suggest a suitable method such as any NDT to prove that ?
So please send your valuable suggestion with reference to code.

Thanks & regards,

Binu.
