Mr. Lalu,
In the down hill position, the travel speed is said to be faster by 1.5 in SMAW and more than 1.5 to 2 time in MIG
welding process.
This higher travel speed no doubt reduces the heat input but also allows a higher productivity, specially in cross
country piping where the total pipe lengths run hundreds and thousands of kms. compared to plant piping.
Further the plant piping has 100% radiography compared to an avg. of 10% in cross country piping, hence we can
use vertical down to increase productivity even though the defects level like LP, LF U/C are expected in someweld
joints.
Vertical down welding is commonly used in sheet metal fabrication (below 4 mm) where over heat in put may case
burn-through in the the thinner sections.
