[MW:17332] RE: 17328] PWHT for Gr. P91/P22/P11 during welder qualification

Assuming you are qualifying to ASME Section IX, you may qualify weldors using QW-423 for alternate base metals and of course using the correct F-number filler metal/electrode.  For example,  you would not be required to use Alloy 91 base metals and –B9 filler metals to qualify a weldor for welding Alloy 91.  (Same for other Cr-Mo materials).  QW-423 would allow qualification for welding Alloy 91 by performance testing with carbon steel (most common choice) base metals and with E7018 (17, 16) for SMAW, ER70-S X for GTAW, PAW, or GMAW.  Note that SAW, machine/automatic are not dependent on filler metal or base metal, i.e. are not essential variables for this process type.

If you chose to qualify weldors on the specific materials and with filler metals to be use in fabrication, then I would recommend that test coupon(s) be examined by volumetric examination per the requirements of QW-302.2 and QW-304(when permitted).

Let me know if you have further questions.

Subject: [MW:17328] PWHT for Gr. P91/P22/P11 during welder qualification

Dear experts,

We know that PWHT can be avoided for  welder qualification (Ref:QW-301.2) even if WPS has PWHT. My doubt is whether it is required to do PWHT while performing welder qualification for Gr. P91/P 22/ P11. Kindly clarify.
